One of the most important things to remember when trying to learn Italian is to speak with native Italian speakers and try to speak as often as possible. Don’t worry about making mistakes. Italian people will understand and will be the best people to correct you. Practice makes perfect is a good concept when it comes to learning Italian. Practicing and correcting yourself is tedious at first, but it will more than pay off in the long run.
Before you go to Italy, it is important to learn at least the basics. It is not only the surest way of getting around smoothly, but it is also courteous to the Italian people. By simply getting books on tape or getting a book with a few Italian phrases, it will help you be better prepared for the everyday situations you will encounter while in Italy.
If you are really serious about learning the Italian language before you go to Italy, I suggest taking a class several months before departing and practicing regularly. If you want to learn the language while in Italy, there are language study programs available for people of all ages. Also, staying a longer period of time will help you get a better grasp on the language.
I wish I would have known more of the Italian language before coming to Italy. It makes everyday situations very difficult and can be quite frustrating. I promise that it will be well worth your time to learn at least the basics of the language before visiting Italy.
