Sicily, Italy, which was once referred to as the 'melting pot of the ancient world', is an island now revered for its natural beauty, pristine beaches, diversity of it’s architecture, its Greek and Roman ruins, delicious cuisine and friendly people.
Sicilia, Italia, as it is referred to by Italians, is located just southwest of the Italian mainland and is the largest island in the Mediterranean, with an area of 25,700 sq. km and 5 million inhabitants. Palermo, is the capital and largest city in Sicily with a population of over 700, 000. Sicily is divided into the nine provinces of Agrigento, Caltanisetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, Syracuse, and Trapani. The island of Sicily has a very diverse geography and is mostly covered by hills, mountains, active volcanoes, and beautiful beaches.
The island of Sicily has one of the most interesting and extensive histories of any place in Europe. Sicily has been touched, changed, settled and conquered by many cultures- all of them contributing to the island’s very unique legacy. First Sicily was settled by the Greeks and the Romans, then the Arabs, and finally, the French, Spanish and Italians, all of which have had a lasting effect on modern day Sicily. This unique lineage is evident in Sicily’s distinct mix of art, architecture and culture.
Sicilian cuisine is almost as diverse and fascinating as the history of the Mediterranean island. Sicily’s food is a mix of all the cultures that have established themselves on the island. The northern part of Sicily’s cuisine has mostly been dominated by Arab influence. The southern part of the Sicily’s cuisine is most influenced by the Greeks and uses more fish and fresh vegetables. Overall, the cuisine in Italy is a delicious mix of present day Italian, Arab and Greek food.
Sicily is well known as a place of art. From Sicily’s magnificent architecture
to museums, Sicily is never one to disappoint the art lover in all of us.
Aside from great architecture and museums, many poets, writers and artists
were born on the island, making it one of the most artistic places in all of
Italy.
Sicily is one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Italy. Some
people come seeking Sicily’s magnificent architecture, art and museums. Some
come seeking Sicily’s beautiful landscape, Mediterranean climate and beautiful
beaches. Some come to see Sicily’s world famous active volcano, Mt. Etna, or
to meet Sicily’s very diverse and friendly people. When I lived in Sicily,
the thing that I most loved about Sicily was the people. From my experience,
Sicily has some of the friendliest people in all of Italy. Whatever be your
interest, Sicily has something to offer everyone.
